What is basal metabolism?

Basal metabolism, or basal metabolic rate, is the amount of energy the body uses at rest to “run” the body. Basal metabolic rate is often abbreviated as BMR from the English basal metabolic rate.

Our BMR calculator will calculate not only an approximate value of your basal metabolic rate but also the number of kilocalories needed to maintain your body weight, the number of kilocalories needed to lose weight, and an approximate amount of body fat.

Why is BMR good to know?

The basal metabolic rate itself is not very important. What is crucial is information about how many kilocalories your body consumes on a normal day. This number is, simply put, the maximum amount of kilocalories your body will still “burn” and not store as fat.

By reducing your kilocalorie intake below this limit, you will lose weight because your body will compensate for the lack of energy from stored fat stores. Therefore, honestly select your level of physical activity in the BMR calculator. By choosing more activity than your body actually indulges in, you will artificially increase the recommended amount of kilocalorie intake.

Keep in mind, however, that the basal metabolic rate calculation and the results of the online basal metabolic rate calculator will always be approximate. If you have a problem with weight loss, you’d better see a nutritionist who can advise you much better.
